Papers, reviews and lecture notes by Rickman, as well as two broadcasting scripts and offprints of his published works. Also included are correspondence and other material related to his publications and papers produced by his posthumous editors.

Typed papers. Some are original versions (including carbon copies) and some were retyped during preparation for two posthumous volumes of Rickman's work, Selected Contributions to Psycho-Analysis, edited by W Clifford M Scott (1957, 2003) and No Ordinary Psychoanalyst, edited by Pearl King (2003). Many items have been annotated and some have been given new titles. As it is often unclear which papers were produced by or for John Rickman and which were produced by his editors, dates provided are those of the original material, unless otherwise stated. Information about dates has been taken from annotations, bibliographies and the published volumes.

Correspondence, mostly professional in nature. Where possible, the subject arrangement used by Rickman has been retained, although some additional work has been carried out to restore date order. These files are arranged chronologically (P03-C-A). However, some correspondence has previously been removed from the original order and this material has been arranged as a separate sub-series, arranged alphabetically by correspondent (P03-C-B). The majority of this correspondence is related to Rickman's military service during the Second World War.

Correspondence with colleagues and various organisations. Much of the correspondence relates to Rickman's work during the Second World War within the Emergency Medical Services (Haymeads EMS Hospital and Wharncliffe EMS Hospital) and the Royal Army Medical Corps (Northfield Military Hospital and the War Office Selection Board).
