Archival history/immediate source of acquisition

The material in this collection was obtained from a variety of sources and the following accessions have been identified: Mrs Katherine Jones donated various letters, mostly from Ernest Jones to Sigmund Freud (Accession 1969-002) and also typed transcripts of letters from Freud to Jones (Accession 1970-001; see P04-C-C-12). Further papers held by the Jones family were donated by Mervyn Jones in 1984 (1984-001); he also donated photographs of Ernest Jones and Sigmund Freud (Accessions 1986-004 and 1995-002; see P04-F). In addition, letters from Ernest Jones to Sigmund Freud were purchased by the BPAS from Sigmund Freud Copyrights via Christie's in 1989 (Accession 1989-002; see P04-C-C-11); the first edition copy of The Elements of Figure Skating (P04-A-D) was donated by Dr Norman Cohen (Accession 1992-004); and letters from Albert Winterstein were purchased by BPAS from Sotheby's (Accession 2006-002; see P04-C-E-20).

These papers have previously been placed in different sections of the archive but were reorganised and catalogued as a single collection between 2005 and 2008. Much of the material received in the early accessions was transferred to the archives' general collection (mainly ref. G13, but also G01, G07, G09 and G12). The majority of the correspondence was transferred to form the basis of the archives' correspondence collection, to which items from other collections were also added; the additional items have been removed and the Jones letters placed in this collection. Also, the photographs were originally added to the archives' photograph collection (files 10, 11, 12, 15, 17 & 18).
