Psychoanalytic and neurological papers by Jones and drafts and other material concerning some of his books, including his three-volume biography of Sigmund Freud and his own autobiography. Further material includes lecture notes, reviews, obituaries and scripts of BBC radio broadcasts.

For many items in the series, dates are taken from annotations, from footnotes indicating where a paper was presented or published, or from the publication dates shown in two bibliographies published in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis (1929, Vol. 10, p. 363-382 and 1939, Vol. 20, p. 493-496).

Drafts and research material for Jones' three-volume biography of Freud. For each volume, there is a series of drafts of chapters with associated research notes and amendments, followed by general research notes and amendments. It should also be noted that Jones sometimes used the reverse side of letters as notepaper and so various items of correspondence, including letters from his publishers, can be found amongst these papers (although most have been removed from the drafts for Volume I - see P04-A-E-01).

Also included are other research materials gathered by Jones from various colleagues and relatives of Sigmund Freud; these are placed last.

Draft of Free Associations, which Jones wrote in 1944. He postponed this project in order to produce his biography of Sigmund Freud (see P04-A-E) and resumed work on it in 1957. Four of the 11 chapters had not been revised at the time of his death in 1958 and this work was completed by his son, Mervyn Jones.

Wide-ranging correspondence concerning personal, professional and political matters relating to Jones' role in the field of psychoanalysis. The collection contains correspondence with almost 700 individuals and institutions, many of whom were significant in the development of early psychoanalytic theory and the international psychoanalytic movement.

There is considerable correspondence regarding psychoanalytic theory, particulary with reference to patients analysed by Jones, Sigmund Freud and their colleagues. Also included are frequent references to the translation, publication and review of psychoanalytic journals and texts. There are discussions concerning the establishment, membership and organisation of the International Psychoanalytical Association, including arrangements for congresses and the workings of national and local psychoanalytical societies. Throughout the correspondence, there are also references to personal matters including relationships, family and health.

There are several peaks of letter-writing activity which broadly correspond to four major themes:

1909-1914: The early development of the psychoanalytic movement including the London Society and Freud's inner circle of colleagues (see also P04-B-B).
1920-1923: The development of the British Psychoanalytical Society, the IPA and the International Journal of Psychoanalysis (see also P04-B-B).
1933-1936: Arrangements for emigration of analysts from Europe during the rise of Nazism (see also P04-B-C-03).
1951-1957: Jones' research for his biography of Freud (see also P04-A-E).

The correspondence is arranged as follows; P04-C-A are Rundbriefe (circular letters) between the central executive of the IPA, discussing administrative issues and psychoanalytic theory. Following this is correspondence between Jones and a wide range of professional colleagues, friends, relations and other individuals and institutions. P04-C-B to P04-C-E contain files for named correspondents where the material is substantial or significant. The remaining correspondence is arranged alphabetically in P04-C-F to P04-C-H.

It should also be noted that Jones sometimes used the reverse side of letters as notepaper and so further items of correspondence can be found in P04-A-E, P04-A-F and P04-A-G.

A set of manuscripts sent to Jones by Girindrasekhar Bose, plus various papers received from other authors.

Newspaper cuttings and other articles collected by Ernest Jones, including items sent by cuttings agencies and his many correspondents. With the exception of the first volume, which appears to have been collated at a later date, the cuttings were pasted into ringbinder volumes which were specially inscribed with the titles shown.

The cuttings demonstrate Jones' wide range of professional interests and reflect early medical, scientific, legal, religious and popular attitudes to psychoanalysis during this period.

The majority of items are from UK publications, including national and local newspapers and academic, medical, professional, political, religious, literary and cultural periodicals, particularly the British Medical Journal, The Lancet, The Times Literary Supplement, The Spectator and New Statesman. A small number of articles are from overseas publications.

All items in these volumes are available to researchers on microfilm.
