Donated by Dr A M Main, wife of Tom Main, in 1993 (Accession 1993-004).


Content and structure

Scope and Content

The majority of the material in the collection is related to Main's literary output, including published and unpublished papers (many focusing on hospital care and the treatment of neuroses) and lectures, reviews and offprints. Also included are broadcasts and recordings of Main, with some associated transcripts and correspondence. Additionally there are papers concerning the work and history of the Cassell Hospital, the methods and therapeutic results of Michael Balint's workshops on short-term psychotherapy and psychiatric interviews, and the Hampstead Child Therapy Clinic 'Index' of psychoanalytic cases.

Access conditions

Partially open for consultation by bona fide researchers, subject to prior arrangement with the archivist and the signing of a reader's undertaking form. Please note that any material from the Bulletin of the British Psychoanalytical Society is available only to members, students and guests of the Society. In addition, the material in P07-E-03 and P07-F (with the exception of a P07-F-C-02) contains patient information and is therefore closed to researchers.

Reproduction conditions

Photocopying is carried out at the discretion of the archivist and according to the archives’ photocopying policy, which is available on request. Copies of material still in copyright can be supplied for research use only. Written permission must be obtained from the archivist to publish or reproduce any material held in the archives.
