Dreams

Material related to two papers: the first is 'Dreams and mental apparatus: 70 years after the Project' (c1965; includes a handwritten draft). The second paper is 'Dreams, psychopathology and mental apparatus' (various drafts and incomplete versions, plus a separate summary), accompanied by correspondence related to the presentation of the paper at the Fourth World Congress of Psychiatry in 1966 and its subsequent publication, plus a publication from the Congress. Also included are various undated notes on the subject of dreams, including reading notes (particularly on Freud) plus a small number of offprints by Charles Fisher et al and one later cutting from the British Medical Journal.

Two papers by Gillespie, plus correspondence and other items. The first paper is entitled, 'Extra sensory elements in dream interpretation' and includes a published version dated 1953, and additional introductory material apparently from Gillespie's presentation of the paper to the British Psychoanalytical Society in 1948; draft material is also included. The second paper is entitled, 'Impressions of the First International Conference of Parapsychological Studies, Utrecht, August 1953' and is accompanied by a copy of a related letter from an unidentified author. The correspondence includes letters from colleagues with an interest in the subject of ESP, as well as letters from members of the British Psychoanalytical Society regarding their experiences with patients. Additional material includes a review of the book, New dimensions of deep analysis. A study of telepathy in interpersonal relationships, by Jan Ehrenwald (1954) and comments for a discussion of an unidentified paper by Dr Amedon[?], as well as patient case notes (currently closed to researchers), reading notes and other notes and cuttings, plus a small number of offprints of works by Jan Ehrenwald, Jule Eisenbud and Emilio Servadio.

The papers by Gillespie are: 'A contribution to the study of fetishism' (1940, two versions); 'The structure and aetiology of sexual perversion' (1956); and 'The psychoanalytic theory of sexual deviation with special reference to fetishism' (1960, with a transcript of a discussion following presentation of the paper at a conference of the Portland Clinic, correspondence relating to publication of the paper in a book edited by Ismond Rosen and an offprint of the published chapter). Also the following undated papers: 'Psychoanalytic concepts of instinct and ego development as illustrated by problems of sexual perversion'; 'The theory of fetishism'; a handwritten, untitled lecture on fetishism and perversions; and a handwritten paper entitled, 'Fetishism and masochism'. Gillespie's additional material includes loose notes, drafts and incomplete papers; patient case notes (currently closed to researchers); letters (incomplete photocopy of a letter from Ella Sharp commenting on 'A contribution to fetishism', plus a letter regarding copyright); anonymised case notes from Special Problems Conferences, 1953 and 1955; and various reading notes and list of references. Typescripts by other authors are: 'Some observations from the analysis of a horse' by [?] Anderson (1955, with Gillespie's comments for discussion); 'The meaning and genesis of fetishism', by Angel Garma (1955, with cover letter); 'Object-relation changes in the analysis of a fetishist', by Dugmore Hunter (1952, with Gillespie's comments for discussion); 'A case of fetishism', by Martin James (1954); 'Foreskin fetishism and its relation to ego pathology in a male homosexual', by Masud Khan (1965); and 'A contribution to the study of masochism and fetishism', by L H Rubinstein (1953).
