Archival history/source of acquisition

The items in this collection were gathered from a variety of sources:

Cuttings in series PC-A were collected by various parties, particularly Ernest Jones (who frequently received cuttings from his many correspondents) and the Society/Institute, including via press cuttings agencies. At some point the cuttings were combined as a single collection in the archives. A small number of these were catalogued, but these are now included in this catalogue. Some items were mounted in ringbinders, but as these were not arranged in any order and presented preservation problems, they were removed from the binders and included with the loose items.

The source of the items in series PC-B (reviews by Charles Rycroft) is not known.

The items in series PC-C were originally added to the library collection and transferred to the archives in 2007 (Accession 2007-003). The articles in series PC-D and PC-E were collected by staff or members and later transferred to the archives; the article about Peter Swales in PC-D may have been received from Peter Swales (Accession 1994-002).

Some items which were in poor condition, including material affected by glue damage, have been copied onto archival paper and the originals destroyed.

Content and structure

Scope and Content

Series PC-A contains a large number of cuttings collected by various parties between around 1907 and 1972 and is divided into five sub-series: reviews of published works by Ernest Jones; reviews of works by other authors; articles about the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sigmund Freud; a small number of articles on economic issues; and general cuttings on psychoanalysis dated 1907-1969.

The remaining series include cuttings and galley proofs of reviews written by Charles Rycroft, 1963-1970 (series PC-B), a copy of a set of articles from The Listener entitled 'The state of depth psychology', 1977 (series PC-C), articles about Jeffrey Masson and Peter Swales, 1981-1985 (series PC-D) and general cuttings from a wide range of publications, dated 1991-1992 (series PC-E).

The majority of this material is available on microfilm.
