The Centre for the Advancement of Psychoanalytic Studies was established in 2000 by the Institute of Psychoanalysis, in order to provide a place for psychoanalysts to work together with psychoanalytical therapists, academics and others to advance our understanding of theoretical and clinical psychoanalysis.

About the Centre

The Centre for the Advancement of Psychoanalytic Studies (CAPS) was established in 2000 by the Institute of Psychoanalysis. Its aim is to provide a place for psychoanalysts to work together with other mental health professionals, academics and others in order to share knowledge and advance our understanding of theoretical, clinical and applied Psychoanalysis.

Every year the Centre offers a series of lectures, clinical workshops and theoretical seminars at the Institute of Psychoanalysis. The lecturers and the leaders of the workshops and seminars are chosen from among psychoanalysts currently engaged in the development of ideas in theoretical and clinical Psychoanalysis or in research.

The lectures are open to the general public. Clinical workshops are open only to clinicians. Theoretical seminars are open to clinicians and non-clinicians alike.

Fees for participating in these events are kept to a minimum.

A certificate of attendance for Continuous Professional Development purposes will be issued to participants upon completion of their course.

In 2008-2009 public lectures will be given by Irma Brenman Pick, on Envy; Marilia Aisenstein, on the Paris School of Psychosomatics; and John, Lord Alderdice, on Fundamentalism, Radicalization and Terrorism. Seminars and Workshops will be given by Caroline Garland, David Taylor and Cyril Couve, on Depression; David Morgan, on borderline and psychotic patients in and out of hospital settings; Joan Schachter and Luigi Caparrotta, on Assessment; Chris Mawson, on Analytic Technique; Penelope Crick, on The Analytic Setting; Jane Milton on Narcissism.
