TREATING PERVERSE PATIENTS: A DISCUSSION BETWEEN DON CAMPBELL AND SIRA DERMEN

This joint lecture will take the form of a discussion between the two speakers. Each of us will explore one aspect of the dynamics of perversion as manifested in the consulting room. Don Campbell will present his views about the nature and function of doubt in the paedophilic act and its enactment in the therapeutic session, followed by Sira Dermen’s discussion. Sira Dermen will then discuss her concept of reification of experience and its potential to illuminate the recalcitrance to change encountered in the treatment of perverse patients, which in turn will be discussed by Don Campbell.

DON CAMPBELL is a training analyst and Past President of the British Psychoanalytical Society, former Secretary General of the International Psychoanalytical Association, and previously served as Chair of the Portman Clinic where he worked for 30 years. He has written on the subjects of violence, suicide, child sexual abuse and adolescence.

SIRA DERMEN is a training analyst and former Vice-Chair of the Portman Clinic where she worked for 17 years. She has written on violence and perversion.
