PSYCHOANALYSIS, READING AND WRITING - Helen Taylor Robinson
INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR
No. of sessions: 5
Time: 8.15pm – 9.45pm
Day: Tuesday
Dates: January 18, 25, February 1, 8, 15
Five seminars on the creative intercourse between psychoanalysis and the arts, via the medium of film (animation and documentary), poetry, drama and the novel.
A choice will be made from among the following artists for each evening: Dostoevsky, Rilke, Lawrence, Austen, Beckett, Golding, Ibsen, Borges, Carrol and Andersen, among others.
From psychoanalysis, theories of trauma, grief and loss, the vicissitudes of the instinctual within societal constraints, and the energies of the perverse will be explored. The intercourse of the arts and psychoanalysis will be approached from the contributions of each, in their signifying difference as well as from within their areas of mutuality. It is hoped that an engagement with each, and with the experience of those attending the seminar opens up new ground.
HELEN TAYLOR ROBINSON has been a psychoanalyst in full time private practice working with adults, children and adolescents, and before that a teacher and lecturer in English Literature. She has a special interest in the arts and psychoanalysis, teaching at UCL for many years, and contributing to the EPFF series on Psychoanalysis and the Cinema. She has published articles on the latter, and also been an Editor and Trustee of the Winnicott Trust. She is currently involved in a film project supported by the Wellcome Trust to make a documentary film, book and visual installation based on the memoir of the schizophrenic Daniel Paul Schreber of whom Freud has written.
