PSYCHOANALYSIS AND THE THEATRE - Gerald Wooster
INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARNo. of sessions: 5
Time: 8.15pm – 9.45pm
Day: Tuesday
Dates: May 3, 10, 17, 24, June 7
In this series of seminars we will consider and contrast such subjects as the long tradition of theatre back to the Ancient Greeks with the much shorter experience of psychoanalytically based individual and group therapy, the therapeutic effect of plays and theatregoing, the use of theatrical metaphor in our psychoanalytic work (e.g. like Joyce McDougal does in her books). This will lead on to the importance of the third dimension so important in theatre whereas many of us work predominantly in twosome communication and then to think about the power of mirroring and mimesis and the variety of theatre possibilities which may include delivering a paper I wrote on Shakespeare’s use of the Play within a Play.
Shakespeare will figure particularly but not exclusively; I shall feel free to introduce a colleague from the theatre and plan for participants to have a theatre outing for a current play running in May 2011 so that we can discuss it together as a group who will bring some of each of their different experiences to bear afterwards.
GERALD WOOSTER is a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society with a background in psychiatry, university student health and was a NHS Consultant in Psychotherapy at St George's Hospital, London, with responsibilities for group therapy. He has had a long-standing interest in theatre and more latterly Shakespeare and through the Institute of Psychoanalysis has pioneered organising block bookings to chosen plays and chaired discussions afterwards.
