Psychoanalytic Reflections
on European Cinema

Edited by Andrea Sabbadini

Projected Shadows presents a new collection of essays exploring films from a psychoanalytic perspective, focusing specifically on the representation of loss in European cinema. This theme is discussed in its many aspects, including: loss of hope and innocence, of youth, of consciousness, of freedom and loss through death. Many other themes familiar to psychoanalytic discourse are explored in the process, such as: Establishment and resolution of Oedipal conflicts; Representation of pathological characters on the screen; Use of unconscious defence mechanisms; The interplay of dreams, reality and fantasy.

epff4
frequently asked questions

(1) Is epff4 only open to psychoanalysts and film experts, or can anyone attend?

epff4 is open to all those interested in film and psychoanalysis whatever their background.

(2) Can I attend only one or two events, or do I have to subscribe to the whole festival?

We can put on a 'waiting list' the names of those who only want to attend parts of epff4, at the reduced price of £xx per half day. However, we cannot guarantee that such places will be available and we shall only know a few days before the Festival whether they are or not.

(3) I noticed various events take place simultaneously. Can I choose which ones to attend?

When booking for epff4 is open, you will be sent a form to indicate your preferences, and we will do our best to accommodate them.
When you receive your epff4 wallet there will be tickets colour-coded (Red and Blue) which will correspond to the different events taking place at the same time. It is possible in some cases that you may not get your first-choice of events. You may however find that someone will be happy to swap tickets with you.

(4) This is a European festival, but I can only speak English. How can I understand films or presentations in other languages?

The conference language is English, so no need to worry.

(5) Are all the films listed in your brochure/website going to be screened at epff4?

The films to be screened in their entirety will be noted in the programme, which will, when finalised, be published in our brochure. The provisional programme will, when it is ready, be featured on this website. Other films will be shown in part, and/or clips of them will be used to illustrate discussion points. You may get the chance to see some of them before attending epff4.

(6) If I find myself in the position of having already paid my registration fee, but am then unfortunately unable to attend, can I get a refund?

The published cut-off date is September 1st 2007. Before this - if you cancell - you will receive a refund of 50% of your payment. No monies can be refunded if we are informed after that date.

Further details will be posted here as the programme for epff4 develops
