Jean-Michel Quinodoz: International Activity

Jean-Michel Quinodoz, MD. (Geneva, Switzerland), Distinguished Fellow of the British Psycho-Analytical Society; Training Analyst of the Swiss Psychoanalytical Society.

From 1994 to 2003 Jean-Michel Quinodoz was the Editor for Europe of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis, at which time he became the Editor in Chief of the Annuals of the IJP, a publication responsible for the translation of a selection of the most significant papers published in the preceding year. With editions in French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish, this ongoing work has been of vital importance in building bridges and developing the exchange of ideas between different psychoanalytic communities. He fulfilled this role until 2014 and has since been the secretary of the French edition of the IJP Annual, L’Année Psychanalytique Internationale.

Amongst his numerous publications, Quinodoz’s book Reading Freud, A Chronological Exploration of Freud’s Writings (2005) has become somewhat of an essential for students of psychoanalysis and has now been translated into no fewer than fifteen languages. He has subsequently been invited to lecture on the theme of Teaching Freud at various universities and Psychoanalytical Societies around the world.

Quinodoz was the founder and Editor of the Bulletin of the Swiss Society of Psychoanalysis from 1979 to 1985. He would become Vice President of the Society in 1985, Chairman of the Ethical Committee in 2006, and later Chair of the Training Committee. He frequently gives clinical seminars and supervisions within the SSP while he also teaches on psychoanalytic technique at a private psychiatric clinic in Switzerland. 

He was the co-chair of the Scientific Committee at the 39th IPA Congress held in San Francisco in 1995 and the chairman of the 9th IPA Conference for Training Analysts held in Santiago in 1999.

More recently Quinodoz has been welcomed by the Moscow Psychoanalytic Society, providing a group supervision and chairing the plenary sessions at the 3rd Moscow Conference (2010).

He was Keynote Speaker at the 38th Congress of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (2012), holding a candidates master class, partaking in a dialogue with Isabelle Lasvergnas and Marie-Claire Lanctôt-Bélanger of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society, and presenting his Keynote Address entitled ‘Dreams That Turn a Page’.

He is the current Chair of the Committee of The Romanian Society of Psychoanalysis, an IPA approved Provisional Society that marks it 25th anniversary this year.
